The Caves of Canelobre "are located in the Cabeço D'Or´S Mountains, 3 km from the town of Busot.
According to the Arab chronicles found in the area and after numerous historical studies, it has been accurately date the time of his discovery: the year 740 AD. Excavated over 7 million years by the action of water on the rocks, the original mouth of the cave entrance is located at 630 meters above the sea level.
However, during the Spanish Civil War, opened another entry a few feet below. This is currently used by visitors to access it.
Canelobre was a place of refuge for the Republican troops in Alicante, and used as an aircraft factory and arsenal. There, the army loyal to the Government built three metal decking for the construction of aircraft engines famous Polikarpov I-16 Type 5 and 6, colloquially called "Fly." The current entrance tunnel to the caves (150 m long) was built at that time to store and repair the material of the plane.
Unfortunately, to carry out this work, the Republican Army blew up a large part of the cave. Even today you can see the flaws of the holes in its dome, with the loss of thousands of stalactites and stalagmites of great geological value today.
It would be unfair to blame people then, mired in a bloody and desperate war with the new mentality that we offer 70 years of scientific progress and geologist, but a good way to imagine the extent of the damage ocasonados by dynamite is to know the process growth of stalactites: 1 inch every 100 years.
The future is sometimes cruel and sad a history teacher.
The average temperature in the cave is 18 degrees (heat in winter and cool in summer) and 90% humidity. All of it is developed in limestones and calcarenites of Jurassic age.
Given the uniqueness of this area tectonosísmica, Geophysics Branch, National Geographic Institute has installed inside the cave, a sensor of the National Seismic Network.
Possibly, the first Arab visitors (loaded with crude torches and bonfires) failed to calibrate the dimensions of this large cavity, and that only a well-distributed high brightness can admire its grandeur. Inside the cave is the highest in Spain vault, 100 meters high.
During your visit you can admire the fanciful forms that have been taking different cocreciones, such as chandeliers, jellyfish and organs.
